What Is Backflow & A Backflow Preventer?

Backflow is the undesired reversal of water flow against the normal direction. This can occur through back pressure or back-siphonage.
Back pressure
This occurs when the pressure in a private water system is greater than the pressure in the City’s water supply system. Can result in water from the private system forcing its way into the City’s distribution system.
Back siphonage
This occurs when the pressure in the City’s water supply system is lower than the pressure in a private system. Can pull contaminated water from the private water system into the City’s distribution system.

A backflow preventer is a mechanical device that prevents the backflow of water into the drinking water system.
Why Do Backflow Preventers Need To Be Tested Yearly?
Backflow preventers are mechanical devices that have interior seals, springs, and moving parts that are liable to being stopped by coarseness, fouling, and wear. These devices require yearly inspection, upkeep, and testing.
